Smoking in PG13 movies increased 50% in the first two years (1999-2000) after Big Tobacco signed agreements with the state Attorneys General promising to end product placement in movies.
The 390,000 kids recruited to smoke each year by the smoking they see on screen are worth $4 billion in lifetime sales to the tobacco companies. And that’s just in the United States.
Either the film studios and their corporate parents are still compensated to promote tobacco, which means they’re corrupt, or they’re pushing tobacco for free, which means they’re stupid.
Help protect our generation from BIG TOBACCO companies by signing the petition to keep smoking out of youth-rated movies!
Hawaii stores are getting stricter in their tobacco sales. The number of illegal sales dropped by almost half between 2008 and 2009. The state's 14th annual survey targeted 356 stores statewide. Undercover inspectors caught only 22 of those shops selling cigarettes to minors.
"We need clerks to keep doing the right thing by asking and checking for our IDs, and if there's no ID, don't sell. We also need for the adults to stop buying tobacco products for youth because this is also a problem," Kruisin' Against Tobacco Sales' (KATS), Fernando Nicolas Corrales said.
Retailers who passed the inspection were recognized Monday at the State Capitol. Hawaii's anti-smoking campaigns are especially focused on young people since 80 percent of adult smokers started before the age of 18.
